TALE OF THE VOW OF SATI SIMANTINI
Many years ago, there was a king named Chitravarma in the country of India. He was very philanthropic and religious. King used to give food and wealth to the poor and serve Cows and Brahmins. He had many pleasures and luxuries, but he was sad about one thing. He has no child. Hence both the king and queen were always sad. Pradhan one day recommended the king to remarry. But the king being religiously minded, left everything to God.
Once this king was visited by sage Narada. The king welcomed him. Then the king prayed to the sage for a child. Naradji said to him: “O King…! You do a Yajna (Worship). After the completion of the Yajna give its sacrament to Queen. With its influence, Queen will get a daughter instead of a son.
The King performed a yajna, enlisting all the best brahmins. He gave a lot of charity and offered the yajna sacrament to the queen. The queen got pregnant. At the completion of nine months, the queen gave birth to a beautiful daughter.
The king called Astrologer to make the maiden’s horoscope and know her future. He made a horoscope and asked to name the virgin ‘Simantini’.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SAMINTINI…?
The king questioned her future. In response to that Astrologer hesitantly replied to the king: “King…! This girl is very talented. Her future is also good. She will be married to a great and glorious king. But in the fourteenth year, she will be a widow.”
“She will be a widow in the fourteenth year…?’ Hearing this, the king was frightened. At that time the astrologer spoke again: “King…! Do not worry. One of her horoscopes is very good. She will become a widow in the fourteenth year, but by the grace of Lord Shankar she will regain her lost fortune.” Hearing this, the king felt somewhat relieved. He gave a reward to the astrologer and left.
Simantini started growing bigger day by day. He studied theology very deeply. Gradually it became clear. She was thirteen years old when the king started making preparations for her marriage. Simantini heard that she was going to become a widow at the age of fourteen. She was very sad to know this. She ran to Maitreyi, the wife of sage Yajnavalkaya, to find a remedy for this and fell at her feet and began to weep.
WHAT WILL BE THE REMEDY…?
Maitreya was very loving, she stood up Simantini and calmed her saying: “Beti…! Why are you crying so much…?” Simantini said: “Hey mother…! Why have I committed such a sin that I have to become a child widow in this situation…? Give me a solution to get remedy from this sin.
Daughter…! Don’t worry. No matter what is written in the horoscope. The giver of good luck is Lord Shankar. If you fast for sixteen Mondays, you will not have any problem. May Lord Shankar be pleased with you and keep your marriage immortal.”
Hearing this Simantini was satisfied and happy. She returned to the place and began her Monday fast. She worshiped Shankar-Parvati on Monday and started remembering Lord Shankar all day. Thus, after a few Mondays, she got married to Chitrangad. The king gave her much in dress and turned her into a father-in-law. Sitting in Simantini’s chariot, Naishad started moving toward the country.
Simantini’s father-in-law started fasting on such an incomplete Monday. Along with fasting, she started praying to God daily for her good fortune. Simantini became loved by everyone in the in-laws because of her excellent qualities. She started serving her mother-in-law and husband with true love.
One day Simantini went for a walk along the banks of the river Yamuna with her husband. Then suddenly Chitrangad’s friend also came there. They told that “Come, let us get into the boat and have a little swim.” Simantini said to her husband, “Lord…! I think within a few moments a wind storm might start, so you should stop going.”

Seeing this Simantini started to cry. It happened that my husband also drowned in the river.
As soon as the boat capsized, many people swam forward to save them, but none came to their hands. They returned to the shore dejected. Simantini came back to the palace with tears in her eyes and tell all the incidents to her husband’s parents. They also started crying. This bad news spread into the whole city and kingdom. Simantini Came at the same time to the shore to take a bath. Suddenly a horse came out of the river water. Simantini’s eyes fell on that horse. Seeing her husband, she became mad.
