1. How many hours does the first draft take?
We wanted to know how long drafting a design takes. Around 12-16% of designers said they take approximately 2-8 hours, while 56% of designers take about 3-5 hours. However, about 8% take 12 hours, and around 4% only take 60+.
Since we do not just account for the professional designers who provide custom knitting services, we can see people taking days for their draft.
So on average, we can say that the designers take about 3-5 hours to develop their first draft. This takes less time than sketching because designers make them quickly. They do not prefer to go into details as they will be doing it in the sketching.
2. How much time do the Designers spend on the first sketch?
The most obvious thing that we asked the designers was how much time their initial sketch took. And, of course, different designers had different approaches.
Some designers said it takes a lot of time to develop design ideas. Sometimes, they get a knitting block where they cannot think of a pattern, similar to a block. So it can take days or months to come up with a new design, to begin with.
However, the sketch takes about 2-3 hours on average. It is because they accurately want to depict the simple knits in the drawing. That’s why it takes a lot of time.
The designer chooses a color and then draws small circles to depict the yarn knots.
First, the designer has to come up with sample knitting squares. They have to fill it in with a base color and then draw the pattern over it. This gives them a clear picture of what they want. However, they can use the design and try to illustrate it by drawing the actual clothing piece.
3. How long does it take to knit the sample?
The next question we asked our custom knitting services providers was how many hours they normally spend on knitting a sample? So different designers had different responses.
24% of people said they spend about 31-40 hours. 16% said they take 41-50 hours while taking 60 plus hours to knit a sample.
We can say that the knitting designers can probably take up to 30-60+ hours or 2-3 days to knit a sample. It takes them so long because they thread and reknit the same design many times to perfect it.
Finding the perfect design for your business or brand is not always easy. We asked designers how long they spend on a single design and what makes them stay dedicated to their work.
Also most of the time the reason is that some of the designers said that they were stay-at-home moms. So they knit only when they have free time. So we can say they can give 3 hours daily to knit their pattern. At the same time, other designers focus more on refining.
