Essential Steps To Wash Your Human Hair Wigs
Washing steps to human hair wigs
Washing your human hair wigs properly and regularly is a vital (perhaps the most important) element of wig maintenance. Fortunately, it is not as complicated as you may believe. This page contains easy-to-follow instructions for cleaning and maintaining your real human hair wigs.
Requirements for washing your human hair wigs?
You’ll need —
- water, of course – to properly clean your human hair wigs. (It should be cold to lukewarm.)
- Shampoo with a little clarifying action
- Conditioner
- Wig stand/head
- a sink or a bucket
- A brush or a wide-tooth comb (for straight and wavy wigs) (for textured and curly wigs)
Steps to wash human hair wigs
Here are the procedures for washing your human hair wigs to clean and moisturize once you have all of your tools and ingredients set.
Prepare
Make sure your wig is tangle-free before you start washing it. Brush or comb the wig with a brush or a wide-tooth comb, depending on the style of the wig.
Straight and wavy wigs both benefit from brushes. On the other hand, a wide-tooth comb is perfect for curly and textured wigs. You can also comb your hair using your fingers instead of a wide-tooth comb.
Begin at the bottom and work your way up until the wig is tangle-free enough to run the brush, comb, or your fingers from root to tip.
Shampoo
You can use either of these procedures to shampoo your wig —
Option 1 (using a tap or faucet):
- Wet the wig with lukewarm water to begin. Place the wig under a faucet and submerge it in water.
- Apply a small amount of shampoo to your palm next.
- Make a lather with your palms and use it to stroke the hair on your wig. Stroke gently from end to root, then repeat until the shampoo is evenly distributed throughout all strands.
- Rinse the shampoo out of the wig, starting at the wig base and working your way up to the tip of the hair.
Option 2 (using a sink/bucket)
- Fill the sink/bucket halfway with clean, lukewarm water, enough to submerge the wig(s) but leaving room for spills.
- To make a lather, add 1-2 pumps of shampoo and stir.
- Soak your wig(s) for five minutes inside the sink/bucket with the hair hanging loose.
- After wetting the wig, carefully swirl it and squeeze off the shampoo.
- Drain the sink/empty the bucket of washed wigs, then refill with clean cold to lukewarm water and rinse the shampoo. To eliminate the shampoo, you may need to rinse twice.
Note:
- When washing your wigs, it’s recommended to use a mild shampoo. Some people prefer shampoos made specifically for color-treated hair.
- Because the wig cap does not need to be conditioned, especially if it is a vented or lace wig, do not use a 2-in-1 shampoo (shampoo and conditioner together).
Condition
If your wig is straight, curly, or afro-textured, apply conditioner to the strands and comb, brush, or use your fingers to comb. Allow 2-5 minutes for the conditioner to soak in before giving the wig a final rinse with cold water. There’s no need to rinse if you’re using a leave-in conditioner.
As much as possible, refrain from adding conditioner to the wig cap.
Dry
To finish:
- Flip your wig and gently squeeze to eliminate any extra product or water. The wig should be somewhat damp but not dripping.
- Wrap the wig in a cloth and tightly squeeze or hold it.
- Twist and wrangle your hair as little as possible to avoid breaking it.
You should style the wig at this stage if you plan to wear your hair in wet-formed curls. Apply your styling product and curl-formers to achieve this. When the wig is soaking wet, however, do not comb or brush it. Air dry your wig or use a blow dryer if you’re in a hurry.
Comb the wig when it’s dry for straight or wavy hair and style it with a straightener or curler if needed.
Store
Finally, place the clean wig in an appropriate storage choice. You can place the wig on a wig stand or mannequin if you want to wear it immediately (within a day or two) after washing it. However, if you won’t be wearing the wig for a few weeks, it’s necessary to put it in a box or satin/silk bag to preserve its moisture and prevent it from dusting.
How many times should you wash your human hair wigs?
It is debatable. Once every two weeks is a good time to give your wig a refresh if you wear it frequently. You do not need to wash your wig frequently if you do not wear it frequently. It’s possible that once a month or every other month will suffice. However, if your wig starts to feel sticky, it may be time to wash it.
- It begins to stink.
- It loses its curls or waves and becomes limp.
- The wig loses its luster and becomes dingy.
Even a high-quality wig will fall apart if it is not properly cared for. You may extend the life of your human hair wigs by sticking to a maintenance schedule and following good human hair care techniques (such as washing them correctly). Although the cleaning process outlined in this article works for all wigs, most wigs come with instructions, which you should follow for the best results.
