Wastewater Treatment Has Become a Source to Generate Wealth from Waste:
Wastewater treatment is a process of removing contaminants from wastewater or sewage. Important water resources are the lifeline of society. However, they are being polluted and depleted at an alarming rate due to the involvement of industrial and household wastewater. This puts the wastewater treatment industry in an important position to develop effective solutions. Recycling not only saves water but also serves as an additional source of income.
Water is no more an asset but gold in various parts of the globe. Various countries are witnessing a high scarcity of water. In addition, growing urbanization and industrialization are significantly fueling the demand for clean water. Furthermore, rising concerns over the environment significantly soar the need to take essential measures to cater to the water demands of the people.
The Importance of Wastewater Treatment
The demand for wastewater treatment is growing steadily. According to UNICEF, approximately four billion people, which is nearly two-thirds of the world’s population, have to face severe water scarcity for at least one month every year. In addition, nearly two billion people live in countries with inadequate water supply. Furthermore, the same source indicates that around half of the world’s population is forecast to live in areas suffering from severe water scarcity by 2025. Aquatech, a prominent industry player, was awarded a contract by international oil and gas services company Petrofac in 2017. The project was regarding designing, engineering, and supplying Source Water Treatment Package for Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) under its Lower Fars Heavy Oil Development Project, Phase One.
Aquatech also implemented MBBR and MBR to provide biorefinery in Nevada at a low cost. Sierra BioFuels Plant in Nevada applies MBBR and MBR in series to function as a complete wastewater treatment system for your waste stream. The facility is expected to process approximately 200,000 tonnes of MSW (Urban Solid Waste) raw material, originally transported to landfills, and convert it into low carbon, renewable jet fuel. The facility produces over 10 million gallons of renewable FT-Syncrude annually.
Innovations During Emergency
Veolia, along with its partners, recently introduced an early warning system, which intends to identify SARS-CoV-2 variants in wastewater. In France, the National Reference Laboratory appointed by the Ministries for Health and for the Ecological Transition1 has recently launched a process to harmonize and consolidate such monitoring methods. The Vigie Covid-19 solution is the most operational in Europe. It quantifies the SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and also identifies the mutations arising from existing variants.
Growing Digitalization
In May 2021, Ecolab unveiled its Water Flow Intelligence, a digital service that offers real-time visibility of water usage, for the companies witnessing water scarcity. The service was powered by ECOLAB3D™, which uses advanced algorithms and predictive analytics in order to develop better business outcomes. The Water Flow Intelligence system of the company uses cutting-edge digital technologies to offer real-time insights and responses.
Xylem Inc. launched a monitoring service to offer data-driven insights for pumps stations. This leading global water technology company unveiled Avensor, a cloud-based monitoring system in 2020, to remotely monitor pump stations and other assets through smartphones, tablets, or PCs.
Sofi Filtration also offers specialized solutions for industrial water filtration. In addition, Anue Water Technologies, a wastewater treatment company offers various solutions for wastewater odor and industrial corrosion control. Aqua green, a CleanTech company based in India, promoted a sustainable approach to carrying out wastewater treatment processes. Its solutions destroy microplastics, medicine residues, and other harmful organic compounds. Moreover, the company’s technology pyrolysis wet biomass residue and transforms it into biochar and thermal energy.
According to a study by Astute Analytica, the global wastewater treatment market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.41% during the forecast period from 2022 to 2030. Thus, it indicates the potential scope of the companies thriving in the industry. Moreover, the rising demand for innovations and advanced technologies will offer ample growth opportunities for the industry growth.
