What is the procedure to obtain model approval in India?

There are two ways to obtain model approval in India. The difference in them depends on whether you’re a manufacturer or an importer.

1. Model approval through testing: If you want to obtain this as a manufacturer of weights and measuring product, you must obtain it through testing. The steps of obtaining model approval for a manufacturer is as follows:
   1. Gather the required documents
   2. Fill the application form
   3. Submit the duly-filled application form with the documents and the sample of the product to the Legal Metrology Department.
   4. The Department would assess the application and documents. No issues are found with them, it will send the sample to the Director General of Legal Metrology Department for testing.
   5. If the Director finds that your product meets the essential regulatory requirements, you’ll obtain the Model Approval Certificate.
2. Model approval without testing. If you’re an importer, testing the product is inessential. Thus the steps of model approval certification are reduce:
   1. Gather the required documents
   2. Fill the application form
   3. Submit the duly-filled application form with the documents and the sample of the product to the Legal Metrology Department.
   4. The Department would assess the application and documents. If no issues, you’ll obtain the model approval certificate.
